In the beginning, the pair just made music for themselves, building layers of sound in the studio from whichever synths or drum machine was calling them.
From 2016 onwards, their modulating electronic compositions sparked interest far and wide, receiving accolades and support from Ben UFO, Palms Trax, Andrew Weatherall, DJ Sprinkles, Laurent Garnier, Sean Johnston (ALFOS) and Craig Richards.
Taking the music live meant bringing experimentation into the mix – instant creation, on stage. But this is music for the dancefloor, and so an Opal Sunn live set is guaranteed to contain a sense of both freedom and groove. Their combination of expansive chords and deep basslines have seen them rock the Berghain Panorama bar, The Observatory in Vietnam and Japan’s iconic The Rain-bow Disco Club festival, among others.
Fresh from Alex Kassian’s multiple Record of the Year winning refix of Manuel Gottsching’s E2-E4, their recent release for Test Pressing, ‘Elastic / Phases I – III’, came from a whole other dimension, powered by their expansive dancefloor musicality, bringing dub and ambient into the mix.
Born in Kyoto, Alex Kassian began collecting records and producing music in his formative years in Japan. He spent several years in London before relocating to Berlin in 2013. As a global touring DJ, he moves from regularly playing at the legendary Panorama Bar, Amsterdam’s iconic Dekman-tel, to holding a residency at The Observatory in Saigon and beyond.
Kawasaki-born, Hiroaki OBA played bass in bands around Tokyo before he began music produc-tion as a solo artist. He attended the Red Bull Music Academy in London in 2010 and is now based in Berlin, while remaining connected to his Tokyo roots. He works in sound design and is a gifted producer and engineer.
Opal Sunn make warm, thoughtful sounds that speak to the body and the mind. 2026 will see them sharing their live sets worldwide and releasing two more twelve inches before releasing their debut album, bringing the gems, and sunshine to a dancefloor near you.
