Among the serene Japanese mountainscape during the 2011 edition of Labyrinth Festival, a project now known as Voices From The Lake was born: the predestined collaboration of Italian artists Donato Dozzy and Neel. Long-time friends and already respected figures in ambient and leftfield techno, the duo came together to explore sound with an uncompromising, experimental spirit. From the beginning, their music has been defined by vivid, multi-layered atmospheres and slowly unfolding textures, soundscapes that feel as organic as they are hypnotic.
Their self-titled debut album, released in 2012, remains a landmark in electronic music: spiritually charged techno built on elliptical patterns rather than rigid structures, it was hailed as one of the year’s most acclaimed releases and established them as leaders in experimental techno. Subsequent projects, such as Live at MAXXI, expanded their sonic palette even further, stripping back beats in favor of deep, immersive ambience. Whether in the studio or on stage, Voices From The Lake channel influences from nature, percussion, and minimalism into a sound that feels both fluid and elemental.
Over the past decade, the duo have performed across the world, released EPs, curated installations, and founded record labels, all while continuing to refine their singular musical vision. Their approach has shifted fluidly between extremes, but has always remained rooted in their meditative, aqueous sensibility.
In December 2025, Voices From The Lake will release their long-awaited second album, II, on Spazio Disponibile. Thirteen years after their debut, the record marks both a continuation and a reinvention of the project: a return to the deep, immersive sound design that first defined them, while charting new territory for the future.
Alongside this new chapter, the duo will also embark on two distinct live formats: high-paced techno live sets that emphasize energy and rhythm, and concert-style performances where they present their released material in a more listening-focused setting. Both approaches highlight the versatility of Voices From The Lake while remaining true to their boundary-pushing, atmospheric roots.
From their origins in the Japanese Alps to their new era with II, Voices From The Lake remain one of electronic music’s most revered collaborations: a project that continues to expand the boundaries of ambient techno while staying true to its elemental core.
